The Twin Valley Fire Department is ready to place into service a 2007 Wells Cargo containment / command trailer. The volunteers have been working over the past couple of months getting the trailer ready for service by installing shelves, radios, emergency lighting, and getting it lettered and striped.

Inside the trailer is a small mobile command area which includes several radios for communications, a desktop computer, and general items for recordkeeping. A 7.5 KW gasoline generator powers the unit, and assist in being independant on the fireground. Four 500 watt lights around the sides provide lighting for nightime operations. On the passenger side, a retractable awening provides shelter during inclimate weather. The trailer is also equipped with heat and air conditioning.

The twenty four foot long trailer provides ample storage for hazmat supplies and containment operations. Squad 69-2 will be the primary unit used to transport the trailer to its destinations.

The flag at the West Grove Station is flying at half mast today, marking the death of Barbara Anderson. Surrounded by her family, Barbara passed away at home. She was 71 years old.

Barbara Anderson served as a volunteer of the West Grove Fire Company for more than 50 years. She grew up in the fire house, often there as a youngster. But during her formative years, Barb was a force in the fire company, serving not only as an emergency responder, but also as an officer in a variety of capacities.

Barb served in every post in the Ladies Auxiliary, when it was at its most active, with dozens of members. She also served as second lieutenant of the ambulance division, and as its secretary. She oversaw the financial side of the ambulance, running the fund drive as well. Barbara was membership secretary for the fire company, and, for a while, ran the Bingo operation on Friday nights.

During her career on the ambulance, during which she ran hundreds of emergency calls, serving with many of our well-known members like George LeFevre and Henry McKinney, Barbara earned a distinction for delivering many babies. And while leading the Ladies Auxiliary and, because she lived just about across the street from the firehouse, Barbara was always first to be up in the middle of the night, making sandwiches and coffee for the volunteer firefighters at emergency scenes.

Many of us first knew Barb as students at the Avon Grove High School, where she worked in the cafeteria. We all looked forward to Barbara’s BBQ (really "sloppy Joe’s," served each week at school.

Barbara Anderson’s family made the firehouse their life. She is survived by her husband George, who served in many capacities at the WGFC, including many years as President. Her life was filled with the joy of her children, and her grandchildren.

The greater Avon Grove community benefited from her many, many years of dedicated community service. Hundreds of families knew of her compassion as an emergency responder. All of us were touched by her lively spirit, and her smile. We will miss her.

Services for Barb Anderson were held Thursday, December 27. A viewing and service was held at the West Grove United Methodist Church. Burial was held at the cemetary at Route 82 and the ByPass outside Kennett Square. Luncheon was served at the WGFC.

Next June 7 & 8, we celebrate a "Firefighters Weekend"; on Saturday with Good Will Fire Company’s 175th Anniversary Parade & Celebration followed on Sunday with the "3rd Annual Firefighters Muster and Challenge" hosted by West Goshen Lions.

To promote these events and honor our county’s firefighters, in early June we will publish a supplement in the Daily Local News where area residents and businesses can honor and support our firefighters two ways; first with advertising and personal messages and second read articles about them and what they do.

We need informative articles written by those familiar with fire companies, training, equipment and supplies, and history. The 300 to 800 word articles should be on specific topics and will include the author’s name and affiliation. Photographs or other graphics are desirable.

If you are interested in writing an article, please reply to Lion Jim Holton at supplement@firefightersmuster.com before mid February with your topic idea (to prevent duplicate ideas) or contact him for topic ideas. We need final drafts by mid-April 2008.

Learn more about these events at www.firefightersmuster.com & www.goodwillfireco.org .
